
In neutral gear, the clutch must be depressed; otherwise, normal gear shifting cannot be achieved. When driving a manual transmission vehicle, it is essential to quickly press the clutch pedal all the way down during gear shifts to ensure smooth operation. The clutch is part of the vehicle's transmission system, functioning to connect or disconnect the engine from the gearbox. It is installed between the engine and the gearbox, with the clutch pressure plate fixed to the engine flywheel, beneath which lies the clutch disc. The clutch disc features splines in the center that secure a driveshaft, which serves as the gearbox's power input shaft. Depressing the clutch pedal disengages the clutch, while releasing it re-engages the clutch.

When I first started learning to drive, my instructor taught me that there's no need to press the clutch when in neutral. The transmission is already disengaged in neutral, and keeping the clutch pressed only causes unnecessary wear on the clutch disc, especially when waiting at a red light. I always shift to neutral and engage the handbrake, which not only protects the clutch pressure plate spring but also prevents foot fatigue.
