
The Lavida features direct injection and is powered by a 4-cylinder 1.4T 150-horsepower turbocharged engine, available exclusively in the hatchback version, positioned as a compact car. The Lavida's body structure is a 4-door, 5-seater sedan with dimensions of 4541mm in length, 1806mm in width, and 1488mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2688mm. In terms of suspension, the vehicle is equipped with MacPherson strut independent suspension at the front and a torsion beam non-independent suspension at the rear. For safety features, the Lavida comes standard with ABS anti-lock braking system, EBD brake force distribution system, EBA brake assist system, ASR traction control system, ESP electronic stability program, front and side airbags for the driver and passenger, tire pressure monitoring, and rear child seat anchors. Additionally, except for the base model, all other trims include front side airbags, with the luxury version also featuring side curtain airbags.

My family's 2018 Lavida is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, which uses a port fuel injection system where fuel is injected into the intake manifold. Later, when I helped my cousin pick up his car, I test drove the 1.4T version, which features direct injection where fuel goes straight into the cylinders. Volkswagen's approach is quite interesting—they stick with port injection for naturally aspirated engines, primarily for reliability. After all, manifold injection is less prone to carbon buildup, making much easier in the long run. On the other hand, the turbocharged versions use direct injection to squeeze out more horsepower in tandem with the turbo. However, direct injection vehicles require regular carbon cleaning, especially in stop-and-go city driving, as the back of the valves tends to get coked up. The newly released 1.2T engine also seems to follow the direct injection route.

Last year when getting at the 4S shop, I specifically asked the technician about the Lavida. This car's performance depends on the engine type. The older 1.6L and current 1.5L naturally aspirated engines both use port fuel injection, with mature technology and easy maintenance. But all turbocharged models (including 1.4T and 1.2T) feature direct injection. The direct injection technology allows for better fuel atomization - the 1.4T version's fuel consumption is about 0.5L/100km lower than the 1.5L. However, direct injection engines require higher-quality full synthetic oil, and fuel injector cleaner must be added during maintenance. My cousin's 1.4T hadn't had carbon cleaning for three years, and last month it started showing symptoms of sluggish acceleration.

I've driven my colleague's two Lavidas with different engines. The 1.5L port injection version accelerates like lukewarm water, but it's exceptionally smooth with no jerking at all when starting from a red light. Later, I drove his newly purchased 1.4T direct injection version, and the push-back feeling when flooring the accelerator was noticeably stronger. The direct injection engine with turbo really packs a punch after the turbo kicks in, making highway overtaking much quicker. However, the direct injection engine is noisier during cold starts, and you can feel slight vibrations when idling at a red light with the AC on. As for fuel, the direct injection version requires premium 95 octane, and my colleague calculated that it costs about a hundred yuan more per month on gas compared to the 1.5L port injection version.

I've serviced all the Lavida models in our company fleet. The fuel injectors on the port injection versions are installed on the intake manifold, making cleaning particularly convenient - any roadside shop can do it for 200 yuan. The direct injection models are more troublesome, requiring intake manifold removal for carbon deposit cleaning, which doubles the labor cost. Additionally, direct injection engines are sensitive to fuel quality - once after refueling at a small gas station, the engine warning light came on the next day. The newly introduced dual injection technology is actually better, though unfortunately Lavida hasn't adopted it yet. If you prioritize hassle-free , choose the 1.5L port injection version. If you want stronger performance, be prepared for the higher maintenance costs of direct injection.

Once when I accompanied a friend to the market, the dealer showed us the engine with an endoscope. A 2015 1.6L fuel-injected Lavida with 100,000 kilometers had spotless valves. Next to it, a 2018 1.4T direct-injection model with only 60,000 kilometers already had a layer of black carbon deposits on the back of the valves. The dealer said this is a common issue with direct-injection cars and requires regular 'carbon cleaning.' However, direct-injection technology is indeed more fuel-efficient, so my friend ultimately chose the 1.4T, which now shows a commuting fuel consumption of 6.2L. He installed an oil catch can to mitigate carbon buildup and adds a bottle of fuel additive every two tanks. If you mainly drive on suburban highways, the advantages of direct injection become quite apparent.
