Is the Engine Ticking Sound Caused by Piston Slap or Valve Issues?

It might be a valve problem. The causes of abnormal engine noises could include the following aspects: 1. Valve noise: After starting the engine, the "ticking" sound is typically from the valves, especially when the engine is cold. This occurs because the oil pressure hasn't built up yet, and the valves aren't fully lubricated. The sound usually disappears after a short while. This situation is common after prolonged vehicle inactivity. 2. Insufficient lubrication: Most cars exhibit slightly louder engine noises during cold starts compared to when warmed up. As long as the sound is even and smooth without being harsh, it's generally not a concern. This happens because the clearance between the cylinder walls and pistons hasn't reached optimal dimensions during cold conditions, combined with inadequate oil lubrication. Normally, when the engine block temperature reaches about 95 degrees, the sound returns to normal. 3. Oil-related issues: Using low-quality oil, prolonged oil change intervals, or oil deficiency can all increase friction between valves and guides, as well as hydraulic lifters, resulting in louder engine noises.
