As someone who’s driven both types for years, the feel is totally different. With an automatic, you just get in, press the brake to start, select Drive, and go. Your left foot never does anything. In a manual, your left foot is constantly working the clutch pedal when you start, stop, or change gears. If you’ve never had to coordinate your left foot with your right hand to shift, you’re driving an automatic.

Even if your gearstick has a “manual” mode you can tap sideways, that’s not a true manual. I’ve got paddle shifters on my car now—it’s fun to control the gears, but there’s no clutch pedal to worry about. The car’s computer handles all the hard parts. So remember, the clutch pedal is the non-negotiable sign. No third pedal, no manual transmission.
