how to strap mattress to car

The safest way to strap a mattress to a car is by using ratchet straps or heavy-duty ropes passed through the open windows of the car's doors, creating a secure anchor point that locks the mattress down over the roof. This method prevents the mattress from shifting or flying off at highway speeds. You will need at least two straps, moving blankets or cardboard to protect the car's finish, and red flagging to mark an overhanging load.

The most critical step is creating a solid anchor. Do not just loop straps around the side mirrors or bumper, as they can break. Instead, open the front and rear doors on the same side of the car. Pass the strap through the door frame and close the door on the strap (be careful not to pinch the strap in the locking mechanism). Repeat on the other side so the straps crisscross over the mattress. Tighten the straps until the mattress is compressed and cannot be moved by hand.

ItemSpecification / RecommendationPurpose
Ratchet Strap Working Load Limit1,000 lbs (454 kg) minimumEnsure strength for securing load
Number of Straps2 to 4Provide multiple points of security
Mattress Overhang (Rear)Max 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 m)Maintain vehicle balance and visibility
Red Flag SizeMinimum 12x12 inches (30x30 cm)Legally required for overhanging loads
Speed LimitReduce speed, avoid highways if possibleMinimize wind force on the mattress

Always use moving blankets or a large piece of cardboard between the mattress and the car's roof to prevent scratches. If the mattress overhangs the back of the car by more than a few feet, you are legally required to tie a bright red flag to the end. Drive cautiously, avoid sudden maneuvers, and check the tightness of the straps after the first few miles. For large mattresses like king-size, a roof rack is a much safer investment, but the door-anchor method is the best option without one.

Just did this last weekend. Forget bungee cords—they’re useless for this. You need real ratchet straps. Run them through your open car doors, not around the mirrors. Crank them down tight until the mattress doesn’t wiggle at all. Throw an old blanket on your roof first to stop scratches. Drive like you’ve got a full cup of coffee on the dashboard—slow and smooth. Check the straps after a couple of miles. Easy.

From a safety standpoint, the primary risk is the mattress acting as a sail, creating lift and becoming a hazard. The door-frame anchor method is effective because it uses the vehicle's own structural integrity. The crisscross pattern of the straps is crucial for counteracting lift forces. Always perform a rigorous tug test before departure. I strongly recommend avoiding interstate travel altogether; stick to surface streets with lower speeds to manage the risk.

I learned the hard way that a cheap solution costs more. I tried using ropes and messed up my door seals. A basic set of two 15-foot ratchet straps from a hardware store costs under $20. It’s a small price for peace of mind. Protect your car’s paint with a blanket you don’t care about. The goal is to get the mattress home without damaging your vehicle or causing an accident. Spend a little now to save a lot later.

My dad taught me this trick: it’s all about the anchor points. Open the doors and loop the strap around the solid metal part of the frame inside, then close the door gently. You want the strap snug in the door jamb, not pinched. Do this on both sides. The mattress should be centered on the roof. Give it a good shake. If it moves, tighten the straps more. Don’t be in a hurry. Take the back roads and you’ll be fine.
