
First, straighten the car body and align it with the center of the S-curve entrance. When the center of the car hood touches the roadside line on the right, turn the steering wheel to the left. Turn the steering wheel to the right, usually about one full turn. The learner should make adjustments based on the rearview mirror to control the distance from the left and right boundary lines. Turn the steering wheel half a turn to the right, trying as much as possible to keep the right corner of the car hood pressing against the roadside line. This helps avoid crossing the line during the maneuver, and the distance on both sides can be flexibly adjusted.

When I encounter a wide left turn in an S-curve while driving, I immediately steer slightly to the left by adding half a turn of the wheel while keeping an eye on the left rearview mirror to monitor the rear wheel position. Remember to handle the steering wheel gently, like kneading dough, and promptly straighten it after the adjustment to prevent the front of the car from veering too much and crossing the right line. The speed must be reduced to a snail's pace—too fast, and there won't be enough time to adjust. Additionally, maintain an upright sitting posture; avoid leaning while driving, as it can lead to misjudging distances. If you feel the wheels are about to cross the line when exiting the curve, counter-steer to correct it. With a few tries, you'll develop a sense of rhythm for how much to steer and when to straighten.

As an experienced driver, I believe the reason for being too wide on the left side of an S-curve is either turning the steering wheel too late or not enough. In this case, you need to quickly add more left steering input, but the movement should be as light as a feather. Keep your eyes focused on the exit of the next curve in advance, instead of staring at the front of the car. Don’t grip the steering wheel too tightly; holding it loosely allows for better fine-tuning. When taking the curve, try to keep the car body close to the apex. Being too wide on the left means you’re too far from the apex. If the right side starts to narrow, slightly ease off the steering to find the balance point. Control the speed well with the clutch—the slower you go, the more room you have for adjustments.

The steering wheel angle directly affects the turning radius when a vehicle is turning. If you notice excessive space on the left side during an S-curve, it indicates insufficient left steering angle, requiring increased left steering force. In this case, you should moderately increase the leftward steering input, but note that the change in steering wheel angle should be linear and gradual. Also, consider the impact of vehicle weight transfer on tire grip, as rapid steering may cause understeer. The rear axle follows a trajectory more biased toward the inside than the front axle, so you need to leave space for rear wheel displacement during adjustment. The steering system has slight play, so the effect of minor steering corrections will be delayed.

The most common mistake beginners make is jerking the steering wheel hard when they see more space on the left, only to hit the right curb directly. The correct approach is to lightly tap the brakes to reduce speed first, then gradually steer left like turning a screw, with each adjustment not exceeding one clock tick. At the same time, stretch your neck to look at the distant curve direction instead of focusing on the few meters ahead. If the right-side distance suddenly decreases, remember to straighten the wheels first before repositioning. Seeing two fingers' width between the rear wheel and the curve line in the rearview mirror is the safest. Having a friend remind you about crossing lines during practice helps improve faster.

The trick my driving instructor taught last time was: push with the left hand and pull with the right, turning the steering wheel like cracking walnuts. If the left side is too wide, turn 90 degrees to the left, count to three silently, and immediately straighten it. Pay attention to where the leather grain of the steering wheel should stop to form muscle memory, which is more reliable. Before entering the curve, move the car slightly to the right to leave enough room for adjustment on the left. In the rearview mirror, seeing the door handle and the edge line maintaining the distance of a bottle of mineral water is ideal. During practice, drawing S-lines on the ground with chalk is clearer than the markings in the driving test field. Driving back and forth twenty times ensures not crossing the line.
