Honestly, just swap it out. It's one of the easier jobs. The part is cheap. The hardest part is dealing with the coolant—make sure the engine is cold! Pop the housing off where the top radiator hose meets the engine, pull the old one, put the new one in exactly how the old one came out, slap on a new gasket, and bolt it back up.
