
The corresponding cylinder of the ignition coil will stop working, causing idle shaking, lack of power when accelerating, and issues such as failure to accelerate and the malfunction indicator light turning on. During idling, there may or may not be shaking, but when accelerating, shaking and lack of power are certain. During acceleration, intermittent power loss may occur, which can result in weak acceleration and shaking. When the air-fuel mixture reaches the exhaust pipe, it may combust due to the high temperature of the exhaust pipe. This combustion generates a large amount of heat, which can clog the catalytic converter's pores, leading to failure.

















Remove the engine cover and carefully inspect the outer casing of the high-voltage wires—this is the most straightforward method. Check if the rubber tubing has fine cracks or feels hardened to the touch. Be especially alert if you notice bulging or oil seepage. Just the other day, while examining a friend’s older car, I found oil sludge near the spark plug on the fifth cylinder’s high-voltage wire. After removing it, the resistance measured was twice the standard limit. Typically, for cars over 5 years old, it’s advisable to regularly lift the hood and inspect, particularly for vehicles frequently used for short trips or left parked for extended periods, as rubber components degrade faster. If you spot scorch marks near the ignition coil from electrical arcing or experience engine misfires during acceleration on rainy days, it’s almost certain the high-voltage wires are leaking electricity. Remember to perform checks when the engine is cold to avoid burns.

Severe engine shaking strongly suggests an issue with the ignition cables. It's particularly noticeable during cold starts—the exhaust pipe sputters like a cough, and the steering wheel vibrates enough to numb your palms. Last month, my own car had this problem: unstable RPM in neutral, and an OBD scanner detected intermittent misfires in cylinder three. Upon inspecting the ignition cable connectors, I found green oxide coating the copper cores—oxidation impedes electrical current. Now, whenever I encounter rough idling, I instinctively check under the hood. The ignition cables can reach up to 90°C when the engine cover is hot, and aged wiring leaks more electricity under high temperatures. As a side note, when replacing spark plugs, avoid yanking the ignition cables forcefully—the brittle rubber tubing can easily crack.

Don't just blame fuel quality for a sudden increase in fuel consumption. Once I noticed my car was burning an extra liter per 100 kilometers. After inspection, I found the insulation on the second cylinder's high-voltage wire had been baked brittle by the exhaust pipe. Driving to the suburbs at night and turning off the headlights revealed blue sparks flickering along the wires—a classic sign of electrical leakage. Using a multimeter to measure resistance, three out of the four wires exceeded 15 kilohms. The factory standard is typically 4-8 kilohms per 10 centimeters, and exceeding this by 20% usually calls for a full set replacement. The new silicone wires cost less than 300 yuan, and after replacement, the acceleration became much smoother. Two weeks later, the fuel consumption returned to normal.
