There are several indicators to determine if the throttle body needs cleaning: 1. Unstable idle speed: The vehicle's idle speed is controlled by the throttle body. A dirty throttle body will directly cause unstable idle. 2. Increased fuel consumption: During acceleration, the throttle position sensor sends signals to the ECU. The ECU receives signals about the throttle opening angle. A larger opening angle leads to more fuel injection. When the throttle body gets dirty, carbon deposits will lift the throttle plate, causing the ECU to receive signals indicating slight acceleration state, resulting in increased fuel consumption (normally detected by diagnostic tools showing opening angle around 0-5° without AC on). 3. Engine stalls when releasing throttle: This indicates severe carbon buildup in the throttle body. The vehicle suddenly stalls when releasing throttle during normal driving, or stalls during gear shifting in manual transmission vehicles. In such cases, the throttle body must be removed for thorough cleaning. 4. No idle condition: The symptom is that the engine only runs when pressing the accelerator but stalls when released (this commonly occurs in Japanese vehicles after engine power interruption or replacement, and can be resolved by cleaning the throttle body).
