
Rotate the cylinder to the vertically downward position, install the timing chain guide rail, mount the timing chain, and align the notch on the counterweight with the timing mark on the cylinder block. The copper link should align with a protrusion in the front groove of the crankshaft timing sprocket. On the sprocket of the horizontal shaft, the copper link should align with three marks. Assemble the camshaft adjuster.

















Last time I aligned the timing on my Perkins 4.236 engine, I first removed the oil pan to locate the crankshaft keyway position, ensuring the keyway was vertically aligned with the mark. Then, I rotated the camshaft gear dowel pin to the twelve o'clock position, at which point the two camshaft lobes had to form a V-shaped angle. The most critical step was aligning the oil pump gear with the triangular mark on the housing, as the shim thickness affects the gear meshing depth. Finally, after installing the timing gear cover, I manually turned the crankshaft three times to check for any binding. Remember, the mark positions vary by model—my old DB1.6 had its locating hole on the side of the gear, and the operation manual included the dowel pin diameter specifications.

Having repaired Perkins engines for over a decade, I've found that timing errors in the 403 series most frequently occur at the hydraulic pump linkage gear. For timing alignment, first rotate the crankshaft to align the TDC mark on the flywheel with the inspection hole, while ensuring the camshaft rear locating pin remains parallel to the cylinder block surface. When loosening the high-pressure fuel pump gear bolts, always use special tools to secure the position - otherwise it's prone to shift by half a tooth. After installation, cylinder pressure testing is mandatory. Last year, a 404D model experienced hard starting due to a two-degree injection pump phase deviation, which was resolved after proper realignment.

Using a laser alignment tool to adjust the timing on the Perkins 1106D is indeed convenient. After securing the crankshaft positioning disc with the fixture, align the pointer to the 0 mark. Install the reflector on the camshaft end and use an infrared calibrator to adjust the phase angle to the 7° specified in the manual. Pay special attention to the backlash of the idler gear; if it exceeds 0.3mm, the bushing must be replaced. Remember to apply molybdenum disulfide grease to the gear meshing surfaces—the last unit that wasn't greased experienced gear spalling at just 3000 hours.

The timing on that 1006 diesel engine at the farm was off, causing black smoke. Here's how I fixed it: Disconnected the fuel injection pipes to prevent cylinder damage, then turned the engine until the first piston reached top dead center. Inserted a 3mm pin into the camshaft positioning hole to lock it in place, aligned the fuel pump gear and idler marks perfectly before tightening the bolts. When installing the belt, pressed the tensioner until it deformed by 3mm under finger pressure—just right, as excessive tightness would cause squealing. Finally, before starting, used a wrench to turn the flywheel three full rotations to confirm no interference.

For Perkins 904 engines used in machinery, special attention must be paid to timing alignment: Operate after cooling to avoid burns, first remove the fan cover to expose the pulley. Use a timing pin to lock the flywheel gap, and insert the camshaft positioning groove into the tooling plate. The hydraulic pump drive wheel must be synchronously adjusted, with the two diamond marks positioned 180° opposite each other. When installing a new belt, use a tension gauge to measure, with 58±3N being the most reasonable value. After completion, a two-second change in the starting sound will be heard upon startup, which is the sound of the piston returning to position.
