
Methods for accurately locating the clutch half-engagement point: As you lift the ball of your foot, it's a gradual process of engaging power. When the driving force and resistance are evenly matched, that's the half-engagement state. The correct posture is to place the ball of your left foot at the center of the clutch pedal, with the entire foot moving up and down during operation. During normal vehicle operation, the clutch should be fully engaged without any slippage. Therefore, avoid unnecessarily pressing the clutch or resting your foot on it - instead, place your left foot on the floor to the left of the clutch pedal. The vehicle's clutch is only used during starting, gear shifting, and low-speed braking.

When I was practicing with a manual transmission, my coach taught me a simple method: when slowly releasing the clutch on flat ground, you need to watch for three signals simultaneously. First, the car body will suddenly have a slight tremor, like the vibration of a ; then listen for the engine sound suddenly becoming deeper, as if holding its breath; finally, glance at the tachometer needle, which will dip slightly. Remember the position where these three points appear together—that's the semi-engagement point! Every time you practice driving, focus on finding this feeling, and after a few days, your foot will remember it. It's best to find a gentle slope to practice on; when the car's front slightly lifts without rolling back, that's the most accurate semi-engagement point, making practice three times more efficient than on flat ground.

Finding the clutch's biting point is all about the feel in your left foot, in my experience. Try wearing thin-soled shoes and slowly lifting the clutch pedal. The first third of the travel is basically empty, but at a certain point, you'll suddenly feel resistance, like stepping on a piece of chewy candy. That's when the car's front end will slightly lift, and it won't roll back if you release the handbrake. Here's the key! Hold your foot at this resistance point, give it a little gas for about two seconds, then continue lifting the clutch. It's especially noticeable in driving school cars; with your own car, it might take three to five tries to get used to it. If you stall, don't panic—just shift to neutral, restart, and try again. Stall ten times, and you'll definitely get the hang of it.

For beginners finding the half-clutch point, remember three things: listen to the sound, feel the shake, and sense the pedal push. Practicing hill starts at driving school gives the best feel—hold the brake, slowly release the clutch, ears catching the engine's growl suddenly turning muffled, butt sensing the seat trembling, left foot feeling the clutch slightly pushing back—that's it! Immediately stabilize your left foot, move your right foot to the gas pedal, rev up to 1500 RPM, then release the handbrake. The worst is panicking and jerking the clutch up, causing a stall and scaring the car behind. Releasing the clutch too fast while in gear also makes a grinding noise, damaging the transmission.

When teaching my child to drive, I described the half-clutch point as 'the signal that the car has woken up.' Finding it actually has a trick: don't practice on flat ground—it's ineffective. Find a small slope, shift into first gear, pull the handbrake, and slowly release the clutch. When you notice the tachometer suddenly drop by two or three hundred RPM, the front of the car lifts like it's stretching, and the engine sound becomes muffled, quickly add a bit of throttle with your right foot to stabilize the RPM. Listen carefully when lifting the clutch—the moment the engine sound suddenly drops, lightly tap the accelerator with your right foot. The headlights will dim briefly then brighten, and the front will slightly lift when done right. After a few reps, your ankle memorizes that subtle resistance feeling, ten times more effective than tutorials. Wear canvas shoes with soft soles—thick soles dull half the feedback. Stay calm during tests; slowly releasing the clutch never fails.
