
Most modern cars have four ABS sensors, one at each wheel. This standard setup allows the Anti-lock Braking System to monitor the speed of each wheel independently, which is crucial for preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking. The system uses this individual wheel speed data to rapidly pulse the brakes if it detects a wheel is about to stop rotating, maintaining steering control and stability.
The sensor itself is a small magnetic or Hall-effect sensor mounted near a toothed ring (called a tone ring or reluctor ring) on the wheel hub, axle, or CV joint. As the wheel turns, the sensor generates an electrical signal based on the passing teeth. This signal is sent to the car's ABS control module. If the module sees that one wheel's speed is dropping much faster than the others (indicating lock-up), it commands a hydraulic valve to release and reapply brake pressure to that specific wheel, sometimes dozens of times per second.
While four is the norm, there are exceptions. Some older vehicles or specific models with a rear-wheel drivetrain might use a three-sensor system: one for each front wheel and a single sensor mounted on the differential or transmission to monitor the average speed of both rear wheels. This is less precise but was a cost-saving measure.

A faulty ABS sensor will usually trigger a warning light on your dashboard.
