From my experience, it's less about miles and more about time and maintenance. The constant heating and cooling cycles cause stress. If you use the proper coolant and change it on time, a thermostat can easily last a decade. Neglect the cooling system, and all that corrosion and contamination will kill a thermostat much faster, maybe in 5 or 6 years. Consistent care is the biggest factor for longevity.

You'll hear a wide range. For a Honda Civic? I'd be surprised if it didn't make it to 120,000 miles. For a turbocharged German car with a complex cooling system, I'd start getting nervous around 80,000. The design and engine bay heat play a huge role.
