Newer, healthy batteries in cars with minimal electronics can hold a charge longer. However, modern vehicles with features like keyless entry systems, onboard computers, and security alarms have a higher parasitic drain, which can discharge a battery in as little as two weeks. Cold weather is another major factor, as it significantly reduces a battery's effective capacity and makes it harder to start the engine.

To prevent a dead battery, your best bet is to use a battery maintainer (also called a trickle charger). Unlike a standard charger, a maintainer provides a low, steady charge that keeps the battery at an optimal voltage without the risk of overcharging. Simply connect it to the battery terminals following the manufacturer's instructions.

If a maintainer isn't an option, disconnecting the negative battery terminal can help by eliminating most parasitic drain. This is a good solution for long-term storage of several months. For shorter periods of one to three weeks, driving the car for at least 20-30 minutes on the highway once a week can help recharge the battery adequately.

With my electric vehicle, the high-voltage battery that powers the motor actually keeps the 12V accessory battery topped up periodically. But for a regular gas car, it's a different story. I wouldn't push it past a month, max. All those convenience features we love are constantly using a tiny bit of power. If you're going on a long trip, just ask a neighbor to start it and let it run for 20 minutes once a week. It’s good for the engine, too.
