Way too long if you're just sitting there waiting for it! I give it two minutes with the defroster on max and the rear window heater going. Then I'm out there with a good scraper. A few solid swipes gets the worst off, and by then the car's heat has loosened everything else. I'm back on the road in five minutes flat. Waiting for the car to do all the work is a sure way to be late.

It really varies. A thin frost on a morning that's just below freezing might only take three or four minutes with the defroster on. But if it's seriously cold, like below 10 degrees, and there's actual ice, you could be looking at a solid 15-minute warm-up before it even starts to melt.
