
Rain can indeed affect motorcycles. Rainwater may cause disc brake failure, allow water to enter the fuel tank leading to carburetor water contamination (affecting startup and engine performance), and dampen spark plugs making ignition difficult. Daily motorcycle methods include: 1. During the break-in period, maintain idle speed at 100 rpm; 2. Match gears with appropriate speeds; 3. When braking is required, release the throttle, press the rear brake with your right foot while gently applying the front brake with your right hand; 4. Regularly inspect spark plugs; 5. For new spark plug installation, hand-tighten until snug then use a spark plug wrench to tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn; 6. Regularly lubricate the chain.

I just washed my bike that day, and it suddenly rained at night. The next day, I found water stains all over the handlebars. Actually, motorcycles have quite a few issues when exposed to rain. The impurities in rainwater can corrode chrome parts and paint, and the exhaust pipe is prone to rust and spots. Now, whenever rain is forecast, I cover the exhaust pipe with a plastic bag, but be mindful of the engine's heat dissipation. Also, after being exposed to rain, rust spots may appear on the brake discs. Before your next ride, remember to lightly apply the brakes a few times to grind them off. Otherwise, the braking force may feel weak for the first few seconds, which can be quite dangerous.

Last year after my vintage motorcycle got rained on, I noticed the clutch cable was as stiff as a rusty spring. The mechanic said rainwater had seeped in through cracks in the cable sheath, causing the steel cable to rust and stick. Even worse, rainwater had pooled in the welded joints of the frame, slowly corroding them—fixing it required cutting out the entire rusted section and rewelding. Now I've made it a habit to spray WD40 on all critical moving parts after rain, especially the footpeg pivots and side stand spring. Last week's heavy rain caught me off guard without the bike cover, turning the documents in the seat compartment into pulp. Motorcycle electrical systems are particularly vulnerable to moisture, and with the ECU installed under the seat, a deteriorated sealing ring could spell disaster. After the downpour, my turn signals started flickering erratically, which turned out to be caused by water seepage short-circuiting the handlebar switch. Now, I always inspect the rubber sleeves on the front wiring harness for cracks. The front wheel bearings are another hidden weak spot—rainwater can channel down the front forks, emulsifying the bearing grease and accelerating wear. You might hear a disturbing clunking noise while riding, and replacing these bearings can cost three times more in labor than the parts themselves.

My friend's scooter had difficulty starting after being exposed to rain. Upon disassembly, it was found that the oxygen sensor was clogged with mud, causing the ECU to misjudge the air-fuel ratio. The aging seal on a motorcycle's fuel tank cap is even more dangerous, as rainwater seeping into the gasoline can corrode the carburetor, requiring the entire fuel system to be disassembled for repairs. From my experience, it's crucial to check the compartment after rain. Last year, accumulated water caused the battery terminals to corrode with verdigris, leading to a breakdown on the road and requiring a rescue call. Nowadays, I try to park with the handlebars turned to the right, allowing the drainage channels to tilt for better water flow. I also place anti-mold tablets in the gaps of the seat, which is especially useful during the southern plum rain season.
