For most new cars driven normally, an oil catch can is not a mandatory requirement. The need stems from how modern engines manage crankcase pressure. The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reroutes blow-by gases—a mixture of air, fuel, and oil vapor—back into the intake to be burned. The problem, especially in GDI engines, is that these vapors hit the back of the hot intake valves. Since fuel is injected directly into the cylinder in a GDI engine, it doesn’t wash over the valves to clean them. The oil vapor in the blow-by gas then bakes onto the valves, forming hard carbon deposits that can rob the engine of power and fuel efficiency.

An oil catch can acts as an intermediary filter. It’s installed in the PCV line and uses internal baffles or a filter media to separate the oil from the air vapor. The clean air continues to the intake, while the captured oil collects in a canister that you periodically empty.
