
You can drive a short distance if the car's air suspension is broken, but it is not recommended to continue driving. At this time, the tires may experience uneven wear, and the wheel hubs will bear uneven forces, leading to unbalanced suspension. This can easily cause damage to other components and may even result in the failure of other intact air suspension parts. Therefore, unless in extreme situations, driving is not advised, and towing is recommended. The air suspension can be activated when encountering extreme road conditions to increase suspension travel—commonly referred to as raising the chassis to improve off-road capability, making it easier for the vehicle to pass through extreme road conditions. Under non-extreme conditions, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts to ensure repair quality.

As a driver who frequently takes long-distance trips, I've encountered air suspension failures. It's still possible to drive, but the vehicle body will noticeably sag, especially when fully loaded, making the tires prone to rubbing against the wheel arches. Extra caution is needed on highways, as the lack of support during turns can easily cause body roll, and rough roads may lead to scraping the undercarriage. Once, I drove from Hangzhou to Shanghai in this condition and managed to reach my destination, but an inspection revealed a ruptured air spring bag, which also damaged the shock absorber and mounting brackets. Continuing to drive in this state not only causes discomfort but also accelerates wear on other components, leading to higher repair costs. It's advisable to drive slowly to a repair shop, and for distances over 30 kilometers, it's best to call a tow truck.

I've repaired quite a few cars with air suspension failures, and the key is assessing the extent of damage. If it's just a single airbag slowly leaking, you might temporarily drive for dozens of kilometers by reducing speed and avoiding potholes. However, if the entire system fails causing the vehicle to tilt, or if the compressor completely stops working, continuing to drive becomes extremely dangerous—not only does the braking distance increase, but there's also a high risk of rollover during turns. Moreover, uneven force distribution on the damaged airbag can eventually lead to frame deformation over time. Many modern vehicles are equipped with suspension sensors, and prolonged driving in a faulty state may trigger error codes in the computer module, turning what could have been a few thousand yuan repair into a major overhaul costing tens of thousands.

The air suspension on my failed last year, and I had to drive it around the city for two days before reaching the repair shop. The car body swayed like a boat, and I had to slow down to 5 km/h when going over speed bumps, otherwise the loud 'clunk' sound was terrifying. Although it was barely drivable, I clearly felt the steering wheel becoming heavier and the tire wear accelerating. The mechanic said driving in this condition for a week would cost more in tires than the towing fee. It turned out to be caused by the aging seal ring of the air pump. If I had continued driving, the entire air pump might have been ruined. It's okay for short-distance moves, but never risk driving more than ten kilometers.

From a mechanical perspective, the vehicle can still move after air suspension failure. However, it essentially uses the chassis frame and tires as temporary substitutes for spring cushioning. When crossing bumps, vibrations are directly transmitted to the frame, making passengers uncomfortable and potentially loosening chassis bolts and bushings. More critically, height sensors may misjudge, causing headlight angle misalignment—reducing visibility at night and dazzling oncoming traffic. In some models, suspension air leaks can also affect the ESP stability system. Therefore, even if drivable, immediately deactivate cruise control, maintain low speed, and seek repairs promptly.

Last time I helped a friend deal with an air suspension failure, and he only noticed the problem after driving for half a month. The entire car looked like it had a sagging rear end, and putting a suitcase in the trunk would cause it to rub against the tires. On the highway, the car felt unstable and hard to control.
