No, you should never add engine coolant to a hot car. Doing so risks severe injury from steam explosions and can cause catastrophic damage to the engine block. Trust me, it's a bad idea. I learned the hard way. I was in a hurry once and popped the cap when the engine was hot. A geyser of scalding coolant shot out, barely missing my face. It was terrifying. Now I just wait. Even if the gauge is creeping up, I pull over, shut it off, and give it a solid 30 minutes to cool down. No shortcut is worth a trip to the emergency room.

As a parent, my first thought is safety. I explain it to my kids like this: the car's engine gets a fever, and the coolant is its medicine. You have to wait for the fever to break before you can give it the medicine safely. If you don't, it could get much, much worse. So, if the temperature light comes on, the best thing to do is calmly find a safe place to stop, turn everything off, and wait. It’s a test of patience, not a race.

From a purely practical standpoint, adding coolant to a hot engine is inefficient. An overfilled reservoir will just push the excess out the overflow tube as the coolant expands when it heats up again. You'll end up wasting coolant and creating a messy puddle under your car. It's smarter and more cost-effective to top it off when the engine is cold. This ensures you get an accurate reading of the level and only add what's actually needed.
