Yes, you can jumpstart a car with corroded battery terminals, but it is not the recommended procedure and requires significant safety precautions to be done correctly. The white, blue, or greenish crusty substance on the terminals is corrosion, which acts as an insulator and creates high electrical resistance. This resistance can prevent the proper flow of current needed for a successful jumpstart and can even be a safety hazard.

The safest and most effective first step is always to clean the terminals before attempting a jumpstart. If you must proceed without cleaning, the connection between the jumper cables and the battery posts must be absolutely solid. You may need to wiggle the clamp or find a spot where metal contacts metal directly through the corrosion. However, this often results in a weak connection, causing the donor car to struggle to transfer enough power. There's also a risk of creating sparks near the battery, which is dangerous because batteries release flammable hydrogen gas.

A better alternative is to use a portable jump starter pack. Since it connects directly to the battery, you can often clamp onto a cleaner, unpainted metal part of the chassis or engine block as a ground, bypassing the worst of the corrosion. After a successful jumpstart, the charging system may not work efficiently due to the poor connection, so driving to a professional for a thorough cleaning is a top priority.

Corrosion SeverityLikelihood of Successful JumpstartPrimary RiskRecommended Action
Light (Minor powder)ModeratePoor Connection / Slow ChargeAttempt jumpstart after brushing off loose corrosion.
Moderate (Crusty build-up)LowSparking / Ineffective ChargeClean terminals thoroughly before jumpstarting.
Severe (Thick, layered crust)Very LowHigh Resistance / Heat BuildupUse a jump pack or clean terminals; avoid standard jumpstart.
Terminal Damage (Eaten away)Extremely LowElectrical Short / DamageDo not jumpstart. Battery replacement is likely needed.

I’ve been there. That crud on the terminals makes everything harder. You can try it, but you'll probably just get a bunch of sparks and no start. The power can't get through the gunk. Your best bet is to take a minute and scrape the posts clean with a wire brush or even rub them with a piece of coarse sandpaper. A solid metal-to-metal connection is everything. If you don't have tools, a jump pack is a much smarter way to go because it's less fussy about the connection.

Technically, it's possible, but the electrical resistance from the corrosion severely inhibits current flow. This often leads to a failed attempt or only a partial charge. For a reliable connection, the jumper cable clamps must bite through the corrosion to contact the bare lead of the battery posts. If a proper connection isn't made, the donor car's alternator cannot effectively charge the dead battery. The process is inefficient and not recommended without prior cleaning.

Safety is the main concern here. Corrosion near a battery, which produces hydrogen gas, is a fire risk if your jumper cable connections cause sparking. Poking around trying to get a good connection increases that danger. Furthermore, a poor connection can cause voltage spikes that might damage sensitive electronics in either vehicle. It’s always safer to take the extra five minutes to disconnect and clean the terminals properly before you even think about connecting those jumper cables.

My dad taught me to always check the terminals first. If they're corroded, jumping it the regular way is a gamble. What I do now is use the "remote grounding" method with a jump pack. I connect the positive clamp directly to the corroded positive post, but for the negative, I clamp it to a clean, unpainted metal bracket on the engine block. This gives the circuit a better path to ground and often works when clamping to the bad terminal itself doesn't. It's a handy trick for a tricky situation.

Does the throttle need cleaning?

The throttle needs cleaning. The throttle is a controllable valve that regulates the air entering the engine. Since the air contains dust and sand particles, impurities are left on the throttle surface as air passes through. Combined with the oil vapor from the crankcase, this forms a black, greasy deposit layer. A dirty throttle can cause inflexible movement of the throttle valve, allowing impurities to enter the engine and affecting normal gasoline combustion. The throttle should be cleaned every 20,000 to 40,000 kilometers. If the driving environment is harsh, the cleaning interval should be shorter. However, excessive cleaning can lead to premature throttle failure, as frequent cleaning gradually removes the special coating inside the throttle chamber, making it more prone to grease buildup and creating a vicious cycle, ultimately resulting in the throttle's failure.

Where is the rearview mirror switch for the Buick GL8?

Buick GL8's heated rearview mirror shares the same button with the rear window defroster. Press it to activate the heating function for the rearview mirrors. The rearview mirror adjustment for the Buick GL8 is located on the door armrest. Before adjusting the up and down mirrors, you need to press the up and down mirror adjustment button first, then you can adjust the mirrors left, right, up, or down. Here are the methods for accurately adjusting the angles of the rearview mirrors: 1. Central rearview mirror Adjust the central rearview mirror so that it is parallel to the horizon, with the horizon positioned at the center of the mirror, occupying 1/2 of the mirror's surface. To ensure a clear view of the road behind, the mirror can be slightly tilted towards the driver. 2. Left rearview mirror Since the driver's seat is on the left, adjusting the left rearview mirror is particularly important. It is recommended to adjust the car's image to occupy 1/4 of the mirror's surface, with the horizon occupying 1/2. This adjustment ensures that you can see the following car's position behind you in the mirror, as well as vehicles in other lanes, aiding in driving judgment. 3. Right rearview mirror Due to its position on the right, the driver's blind spot is larger, so the adjustment angle differs from the left rearview mirror. Keep the car's image at 1/4 of the mirror's surface, but adjust the horizon's proportion to occupy 2/3 of the mirror's surface.

Is it necessary to add fuel cleaner?

It is necessary to add fuel cleaner. Here are the specific reasons for adding fuel cleaner: 1. Currently, fuel cleaner is also known as fuel additive. Fuel additive is a commonly used gasoline additive; 2. It is designed to compensate for certain deficiencies in gasoline, endowing gasoline with new and excellent characteristics, such as cleaning system carbon deposits, increasing octane value, improving atomization, reducing wear, and protecting the engine; 3. However, for new cars, it is not recommended to add fuel cleaner to allow parts and components, especially the engine, to grind to the optimal state. Using normal fuel directly can grind the vehicle to the best condition.

Is the Changan Oushang X5 a Joint Venture or Domestic Vehicle?

Changan Oushang is an independent brand, and the vehicles under this brand are essentially domestic cars. Changan Oushang offers a wide range of SUV and MPV models. The MPV models under Changan Oushang include the Changan Oushang A600, Changan Oushang A800, Changan Oushang Changxing, and Changan Oushang Kosai, among others. Below are specific details about the Changan Oushang Kosai: 1. The Changan Oushang Kosai is a mid-size MPV, equipped with two types of engines: a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine and a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. The 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine delivers 128 horsepower and a maximum torque of 168 Nm. This engine features multi-point fuel injection technology and utilizes an aluminum alloy cylinder head and block. It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine produces 178 horsepower and a maximum torque of 265 Nm. This engine incorporates direct fuel injection technology and also uses an aluminum alloy cylinder head and block. It is matched with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The dual-clutch transmission enhances gear shifting speed and transmission efficiency. One clutch in the dual-clutch system controls the odd-numbered gears, while the other manages the even-numbered gears. 2. The Changan Oushang Kosai employs a MacPherson independent suspension at the front and a torsion beam non-independent suspension at the rear. The use of a torsion beam rear suspension helps to maximize rear passenger space and trunk capacity.
