can electric cars jump start other cars

Yes, most modern electric cars (EVs) can jump-start another vehicle with a dead 12-volt battery, but the process is different and requires careful attention to safety. You are not using the car's main high-voltage traction battery. Instead, you are using its smaller, auxiliary 12-volt battery, which powers the lights, windows, and computer systems, just like in a gasoline car.

The critical difference is that you must first wake up the EV's 12-volt system. In many EVs, simply opening the door or turning on the "accessory" or "ready" mode activates a DC-to-DC converter. This device draws power from the large high-voltage battery to charge the smaller 12-volt battery, ensuring it has sufficient voltage for the jump-start. Attempting to jump-start another car without the EV in the correct mode could drain its own 12-volt battery, leaving you with two stranded vehicles.

The correct procedure is as follows:

  1. Ensure your EV is turned off or in park.
  2. Identify the 12-volt battery terminals. In many EVs, the battery is tucked away, but there are dedicated positive (+) and negative (-) jump-start terminals under the frunk (front trunk) or under a specific cover.
  3. Connect the red positive clamp to the dead battery's positive terminal.
  4. Connect the other red positive clamp to your EV's positive terminal or jump-start point.
  5. Connect the black negative clamp to your EV's negative terminal or a solid, unpainted metal ground point.
  6. Connect the final black negative clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the disabled car's engine block, away from the battery.
  7. Start the EV's "ready" or accessory mode to energize the system.
  8. Attempt to start the disabled gasoline car.

It's generally safer and recommended to use a portable jump starter for either vehicle. Some EVs, like certain Ford F-150 Lightning models, even have built-in Pro Power Onboard outlets that can power a battery charger.

Honestly, I was nervous the first time I had to do it with my Tesla. The manual is your best friend here—don't just guess. You're not hooking up to the big battery; it's a smaller one hidden under the front trunk liner. The key is to get the car into the right mode so it's supplying power. I connected the cables exactly like the book said, found a good bare metal spot for the negative clamp, and it worked perfectly. It's totally doable, but you have to follow the steps to the letter.

Technically, it's possible, but I'd strongly advise against it for the average person. The risk of causing expensive damage to the EV's sensitive electronics is real if there's a voltage spike or you connect the cables incorrectly. The 12-volt systems in EVs are not designed for the massive cold-cranking amps a large truck engine might need. It's a much safer bet to carry a compact lithium-ion jump starter pack in your EV. They're inexpensive, foolproof, and you don't need another car.

It's fascinating, really. An EV acts like a portable power station. When you jump-start another car, the EV's DC-DC converter kicks in, essentially using the massive main battery to continuously replenish the 12-volt battery, providing stable power. This is actually cleaner and more consistent than relying on a gasoline car's alternator, which needs the engine to be revving. Some newer EVs with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability can even skip the cables and power a battery charger directly from an outlet.

My neighbor's SUV was dead in the driveway last winter, and my Chevy Bolt was the only car around. I looked up the process on my phone. It was straightforward: pop the hood, find the red positive terminal under a little plastic cover, and hook up the cables. The most important part was connecting the black negative cable to an unpainted bolt on the SUV's engine, not the dead battery itself. After I made sure everything was secure, I got in my Bolt, pressed the power button, and his SUV started right up. It was no harder than a regular jump-start.

What does code on a car mean?

Car code indicates that there is a fault in the vehicle, and the specific fault code needs to be checked by connecting to diagnostic equipment. Below is relevant information: 1. Different functions depending on the vehicle model configuration: Some vehicle models' driver information centers cannot display Chinese messages, and vehicle information will show faults as code numbers. For example, Chevrolet Cavalier code 35 means "Please replace the remote key battery," and code 79 means "Insufficient engine oil, please add." 2. Serves to check mechanical faults: Some fault codes may not necessarily indicate electronic component failure but could also be caused by mechanical issues. Mechanical problems can lead to distorted signals in the electronic control system, generating fault codes.

How many kilometers should a 125cc scooter go before changing the oil?

This depends on the model and usage duration. Here is the relevant information: 1. Based on the model: Domestic common cross-type and underbone models require oil changes every 2,000 kilometers with standard oil. Domestic scooters require oil changes every 800 to 1,500 kilometers with standard oil. Of course, synthetic oils like Mobil 1 can be changed every 5,000 to 8,000 kilometers. 2. Based on usage duration: Generally, the first oil change should be at 500 kilometers, the second at 1,000 kilometers for a full service, and then every 1,000 kilometers or around every six months thereafter. During the break-in period, due to the relatively rough friction between parts, small metal particles are generated. After three oil changes, once the break-in period is over, changing the oil every 2,000 kilometers ridden is sufficient.
