Think about it: your phone battery doesn't last that long, and your car's job is way harder. It has to crank a cold engine on a winter morning. Heat, cold, and just normal wear tear it down. Plan on replacing it around the 4-year mark to avoid getting stranded. It’s cheap insurance.

From a purely technical standpoint, the materials in a car battery have a finite life. The degradation mechanisms—sulfation, grid corrosion, and electrolyte loss—are continuous. Even with perfect maintenance, these processes occur. A 14-year lifespan would require near-zero degradation, which is not achievable with current consumer-level lead-acid technology. It's less about if it can and more about the overwhelming odds that it won't. The engineering and chemistry simply aren't designed for that duration.

I treat my car battery like any other consumable part, similar to tires or brake pads. It has a job to do and a predictable service life. Sure, you might get a set of tires that last 60,000 miles instead of 40,000, but you wouldn't expect them to last 120,000. It's the same with a battery.
