The 1971 dollar coin, commonly referred to as the Eisenhower Dollar, features a portrait of the 34th U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, on its obverse (the "heads" side). This series of dollar coins was minted from 1971 to 1978.
The reverse side of the coin (the "tails" side) commemorates the Apollo 11 moon landing. The design is a stylized depiction based on the mission patch created by astronaut Michael Collins. It features an American eagle landing on the moon, clutching an olive branch as a symbol of peace, with the Earth visible in the distance. This dual design honors both a celebrated American president and a landmark achievement in space exploration.
