A Dollar with a "CC" designation refers to a one-dollar silver coin struck at the United States Mint facility in Carson City, Nevada. The "CC" is the official mint mark for this branch mint, and it is located on the reverse side of the coin, just below the eagle's tail feathers.
The Carson City Mint was established to coin the massive silver deposits discovered in the nearby Comstock Lode. It produced Morgan Dollars intermittently between 1878 and 1893. Coins from this mint are particularly popular among numismatists for several reasons. Their direct connection to the history of the American West and the great silver rushes of the 19th century gives them a unique historical appeal.
Furthermore, the mintage figures for Carson City Morgan Dollars were often significantly lower than those from other mints like Philadelphia or San Francisco, making many "CC" issues rarer and more valuable. The discovery of a large government hoard of uncirculated Carson City dollars in the 1960s, later sold by the General Services Administration (GSA), further cemented their legendary status within the collecting community, making them one of the most sought-after series in American coinage.
