To prevent a sofa from moving on a smooth surface like hardwood or tile, several effective methods can be employed. The most direct solution involves using specialized furniture grippers or pads. These are typically small, non-slip pads made of rubber or a similar high-friction material that are placed directly under the sofa's legs. They are designed to create a strong grip on the floor, effectively stopping the couch from sliding when someone sits down or moves around. These anti-slip pads are widely available and come in various shapes and sizes to fit different types of furniture feet.
Another common and effective strategy is to place an area rug under the sofa. The texture of the rug provides significantly more friction than a smooth floor, holding the furniture in place. For this to work best, at least the front legs of the sofa should be positioned securely on the rug. If the rug itself tends to slide, placing a non-slip rug pad underneath it will anchor both the rug and the sofa.
For a more do-it-yourself approach, you can cut small squares from rubber shelf liner and place them under the couch legs. This material works similarly to commercial furniture grippers by increasing the friction between the sofa and the floor. Each of these solutions offers a reliable way to keep your sofa stationary.
