When placing an area rug under a couch, the primary goal is to create a unified and defined seating area. The most widely accepted and effective guideline is to ensure at least the front legs of the sofa are positioned on the rug. This approach anchors the furniture and connects the pieces within the space, preventing the rug from looking like an isolated island in the middle of the room. This rule is a reliable standard for almost any living room configuration.
For a more cohesive and luxurious look, an ideal placement involves having all four legs of the couch sitting entirely on the rug. If you choose this option, the rug should be large enough to extend beyond the ends of the sofa. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 15 to 20 centimeters of the rug visible on either side of the couch. This ensures the rug frames the seating area properly without being overwhelmingly large or too small.
One common mistake to avoid is the "floating" layout, where the area rug is placed in the center of the room with no furniture touching it. This arrangement often makes a room feel smaller and disjointed, as it fails to connect the furniture. While it may be a necessary choice in very small spaces, it is generally not recommended for creating a well-designed, cohesive living area. The rug should always serve to unify the furniture, not separate it.
