Don't panic! A gel nail polish spill on your sofa might look like a catastrophe, but you can absolutely tackle it with the right strategy. Your beautiful sofa can be saved, and the key is a careful, methodical approach rather than frantic scrubbing.
First, because gel polish hardens into a solid layer, your initial attack is physical. Gently take a dull knife or even a razor blade, hold it as flat as you can against the fabric, and carefully scrape away as much of the hardened polish as possible. The goal is to lift the bulk of the spill without snagging or cutting the sofa's fibers, so patience and a gentle hand are your best friends here.
Once you've removed the solid pieces, you'll work on the remaining stain. Before you apply any liquid, it is absolutely essential to do a spot test. Find an inconspicuous area on your sofa, like a seam on the back or under a cushion, and apply a small amount of your chosen cleaning solvent to ensure it doesn't discolor or damage the fabric. Acetone or rubbing alcohol are your most powerful options.
After a successful spot test, apply a small amount of the acetone or alcohol to a clean, white cloth, not directly onto the stain. Gently blot the polish stain, working from the outside edges inward to prevent it from spreading. You'll see the polish transfer to the cloth. Keep switching to a clean section of the cloth as you go to avoid reapplying the stain. Continue this careful blotting process until the polish is gone.
Finally, to remove any solvent residue, mix a simple solution of a few drops of clear dish soap in a cup of warm water. Dab a fresh cloth in this solution and blot the area to rinse it. Follow up by blotting with a cloth dampened with plain water. To finish, press a clean, dry towel firmly onto the spot to absorb as much moisture as possible and let it air dry completely. With this careful process, you can restore your sofa and erase any evidence of the spill.
