To disassemble an Ashley sectional sofa for moving or rearranging, the process typically involves locating and disengaging the hardware that connects the individual pieces. While specific models may vary, most sectionals use a system of interlocking metal brackets to hold the components securely together.
First, prepare the sofa by removing all loose cushions, pillows, and any other items. This makes the sections lighter and provides better visibility and access to the connection points. Next, identify where the separate sections of the sofa meet. The connecting hardware is usually located on the sides of the frames, near the bottom. You may need to tilt a section slightly or reach into the gap between the pieces to find them.
The most common connection mechanism consists of interlocking brackets, sometimes referred to as gator clips. One section will have a bracket with upward-facing teeth or a post, while the adjacent section has a corresponding bracket that it slots into. To separate the pieces, you typically need to lift one section straight up a few inches to unhook its bracket from the other. This often requires two people, one on each end of the section being lifted, to ensure it is raised evenly and safely. Once lifted, the section can be pulled away from the rest of the sofa.
After the primary sections are separated, you may also need to remove the sofa's feet or legs, especially if you need to navigate tight corners or narrow doorways. Most sofa legs are simply screwed into the frame and can be twisted off by hand or with a basic wrench or screwdriver. Following these steps should allow you to disassemble your sectional into manageable pieces.
