Conditioning a leather sofa is an essential step to restore moisture, prevent the material from drying out and cracking, and keep it soft and supple. This process should generally be done after cleaning the sofa or as a regular treatment every six to twelve months.
To begin, select a high-quality leather conditioner specifically formulated for furniture. It is best to avoid any products containing wax or silicone, as these can leave a sticky residue on the surface. Once you have your conditioner, start by applying a small amount to a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, such as a microfiber cloth.
Working in small, manageable sections, gently rub the conditioner into the leather using a circular motion. Applying the product in this methodical way ensures even and complete coverage over the entire sofa.
After you have applied the conditioner to the whole piece, it is important to allow it to fully absorb into the leather. Let the product sit for at least an hour; some conditioners may recommend a longer period, such as two hours or overnight, for optimal penetration. Once the absorption time is complete, take a separate clean, dry cloth and thoroughly buff the surface of the sofa. This final step will remove any excess product and leave the leather feeling smooth and revitalized.
