Hello there! Tackling the foam inserts of your sofa cushions can definitely make a huge difference in getting your couch truly clean. It’s a bit of a process, but totally manageable with some patience.
First and foremost, the most important rule is to avoid putting the foam cushions in the washing machine or dryer. The aggressive spinning and high heat can cause the foam to disintegrate or break apart, so a gentle hand-washing approach is the way to go.
A great way to do this is in your bathtub. Fill the tub with lukewarm water and add a small amount of a mild detergent, like Woolite. Submerge the foam cushion and gently squeeze it several times to work the soapy water all the way through. Once you feel it's clean, drain the tub and refill it with clean water. Keep pressing and squeezing the foam to rinse out all the soap. You may need to repeat this rinsing process a few times until the water runs clear and is free of suds.
Now comes the most critical part: drying. The foam must be completely dry before you put the covers back on to prevent any mildew from forming. Start by squeezing out as much water as you possibly can without wringing or twisting the foam. You can then lay the cushion on a clean towel, roll them up together tightly, and press down firmly to absorb more moisture.
After you've removed the excess water, set the foam up to air dry in a well-ventilated area. It helps to prop it up on its side or stand it up so that air can circulate all around it. Pointing a fan directly at the cushion will significantly speed up the process. Be prepared for this to take some time; it could easily be a few days before the foam is 100% dry to the core. Once it is, you can pop the cover back on and enjoy your refreshed sofa
