Hello there! Giving an old sofa a good cleaning is a fantastic way to breathe new life into it and freshen up your living space. It’s definitely a project you can tackle at home.
Before you start, the most important first step is to find the manufacturer's tag on the sofa. This tag should have a cleaning code that tells you exactly what you can safely use on the fabric. You'll usually see a "W" for water-based cleaners, an "S" for solvent-based cleaners (no water), "W/S" for either water or solvent-based cleaners, or an "X," which means you should only vacuum it. Knowing this code is crucial to avoid damaging the upholstery.
Once you know what you're working with, begin with a thorough dry cleaning. Take a stiff brush and go over the entire couch to loosen any dried-on dirt, crumbs, or gunk. Then, grab your vacuum and use the brush and crevice attachments to suck up all that loose debris. Make sure to get deep into the seams, along the trim, and under any cushions. If you have pets, a lint roller is great for picking up any lingering hair after vacuuming.
For a deep clean on a water-safe couch (one with a "W" or "W/S" tag), you have a couple of options. Many people find great success using an upholstery cleaning machine, like a Bissell Little Green. These machines wash the fabric with a cleaning solution and then extract the dirty water, pulling out a surprising amount of grime.
If you'd rather go the DIY route, you can create a gentle cleaning solution. A common mix is a quarter cup of white vinegar, three-quarters of a cup of warm water, and a tablespoon of dish soap. Before you apply it all over, be sure to test the solution on a small, hidden spot of the couch to make sure it doesn't cause any discoloration. If it's safe, you can gently apply the cleaner with a soft cloth, then wipe the area with a second cloth dampened with plain water to "rinse" it, and finally blot it dry with a clean towel.
After any wet cleaning, just be sure to let the sofa air dry completely before using it again to prevent any mustiness from setting in.
