Connecting your Polk R500 floorstanding tower speakers to your amplifier or receiver involves a few straightforward steps. First, prepare your wire by stripping about 0.5 inches (12.7mm) of insulation from each end, exposing the bare metal conductors. Twist the individual strands of each conductor to prevent fraying. On the back of your Polk R500 speakers, you'll find binding posts, with one marked red (+) for positive and one marked black (-) for negative.
Next, connect the speaker wires to the binding posts. Unscrew the binding post cap and insert the bare wire into the hole near the base. Ensure you connect the positive (+) terminal on your amplifier or receiver to the red (+) terminal on the speaker, and the negative (-) terminal on your amplifier or receiver to the black (-) terminal on the speaker. Tighten the binding post cap firmly, but avoid over-tightening.
You can also use connectors such as banana plugs or spade lugs, which may provide a more secure connection. When using connectors, follow the same polarity guidelines (+ to +, - to -).
For more advanced setups, consider bi-wiring or bi-amping your Polk R500 speakers. To bi-wire, remove the jumpers on the back of each speaker and run separate speaker wires from your amplifier to the low and high frequency drivers. Connect one set of wires to the upper terminals and the other to the lower terminals. Ensure both wire sets connect to the same amplifier outputs.
For bi-amping, remove the jumpers and connect speaker wires from the high-frequency amplifier outputs to the upper terminals and the low-frequency outputs to the lower terminals, always maintaining correct polarity (+ to +, - to -). Refer to your amplifier's manual for specific instructions on these advanced configurations.
Finally, for home theater setups using bass management, set your Polk R500 speakers to "small" if using a subwoofer and set the crossover frequency between 40-80Hz. If no subwoofer is present, set the speakers to "large."
