Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), you’re allowed to ask only two questions to confirm whether a dog is a service animal when its role isn’t immediately clear: whether the dog is required because of a disability, and what specific work it has been trained to perform. You cannot ask about the person’s disability, request paperwork, or require the dog to show its trained tasks.
