Across the United States, the majority of states allow home burials, but 13 states impose restrictions. Among those, 8 require a licensed funeral director to assist in some part of the burial, like completing paperwork or supervising the handling of remains. The other 5 states forbid private burials altogether, mandating that all burials take place in established cemeteries under state law.
