Why is the steering wheel on the left side of the car?

Car steering wheels are positioned on the left side based on a country's driving direction regulations. In countries with right-hand traffic, the steering wheel is on the left, while in the United States, which has left-hand traffic, the steering wheel is on the right. This arrangement is designed to provide better visibility while driving. The placement of the steering wheel on the left and the adoption of right-hand traffic originated from the habit of carriage drivers sitting on the left and driving on the right. Since carriage drivers typically held the whip in their right hand, sitting on the left side of the carriage made it easier to control the horses. Positioning the car's steering wheel on the left allows drivers to better judge the distance from oncoming vehicles, reducing the risk of collisions. It also provides a clearer view of oncoming traffic when overtaking.
