Subject 3 test gear requirements are as follows: 1. When using first or second gear: The driving distance cannot continuously exceed 500 meters, otherwise it will be judged as a test failure. 2. When using third gear: Accelerate to reach 20 km/h before switching to third gear. 3. When using fourth gear: When the speed exceeds 30 km/h, you can switch to fourth gear. The content of the Subject 3 road driving skills test includes: vehicle preparation, light simulation test, starting, straight-line driving, gear shifting operation, lane changing, parking by the side of the road, going straight through intersections, turning at intersections, meeting vehicles, overtaking, making U-turns, and night driving.

When I was taking the driving test for Subject 3, the instructor kept emphasizing gear rhythm! You must start in first gear and coast for no more than 50 meters or you'll fail. Once steady, immediately shift to second gear and maintain around 20 km/h. For straight-line driving, stay in second gear—don’t get trigger-happy with shifting. When you hear 'gear change,' floor the gas to jump to third gear, hit 30 km/h, then drop back to second. For U-turns and parking, you must crawl in first gear—using second gear means instant points off. If you forget to downshift to first during roadside parking and stall before the wheels even touch the line, it’s game over—a fellow test-taker failed just like that. Remember the mantra: Start in first, cruise in second, third gear’s just for thirty seconds.

Shifting gears in Subject 3 is no joke! The examiner’s eyes are sharp—if you coast at an intersection in second gear, you’ll fail instantly. Staying in second gear for 80% of the test is the safest bet. Ease off the throttle near bus stops and school zones without shifting. The gear acceleration/deceleration test is all about third gear—when the engine roars, count to three and downshift. Remember, second gear is safest for turns; last time, someone struggled to steer in third gear. Always park in first gear—you can even nudge the car into position if it’s crooked. Ignore the myth of cruising in third gear; shifting over solid lines will make you retake the test on the spot.

The gear rules for Subject 3 are quite rigid, but mastering them ensures passing. Start in 1st gear, shift to 2nd immediately after moving, and maintain 15-25 km/h. Lock in 2nd gear throughout the straight-line driving. When hearing the gear shift command: press the accelerator deeply to speed up to 30 km/h, shift to 3rd gear, count two seconds silently, then shift back to 2nd. For U-turns or pulling over, you must downshift to 1st gear. Never exceed the speed limit in 3rd gear, and avoid letting 2nd gear drop below 15 km/h to prevent shaking, which counts as improper operation. The clutch on test cars is generally set high, so ensure it's fully depressed when shifting gears.

Gear-speed coordination is crucial during the driving test! First gear should not exceed 20km/h, second gear 15-30km/h, and third gear 25-40km/h. You must shift to second gear within 10 meters after starting, and failing to shift gears beyond 50 meters will deduct 100 points. Slow down to second gear under 20km/h at least 20 meters before turning at intersections. Forced shifting to third gear below 25km/h during gear changes will cause severe vehicle shaking, making the examiner frown and you panic. When encountering slow-moving vehicles ahead, avoid downshifting to first gear; using second gear with half-clutch for creeping is more stable. If the parking distance exceeds 30cm, fine adjustments in first gear are much more reliable than sharp steering.

Mistakes with gear shifting are a major reason for failing the driving test (Subject 3)! My instructor taught me a simple method: divide the test route into five sections and memorize the gears for each. For example, Section 1 (starting): shift from 1st to 2nd gear; Section 2 (straight road): stay in 2nd gear; Section 3 (gear change point): accelerate to 3rd gear from 2nd, then return to 2nd; Section 4 (turning): take the turn in 2nd gear; Section 5 (finish line): downshift to 1st gear and stop. Memorize this rhythm and keep an eye on the speedometer during the test: below 20 km/h, you can shift to 1st gear; above 20 km/h, you must stay in 2nd gear; and only at 30 km/h can you shift up to 3rd gear. Here’s a little secret: if the engine stalls, never start directly in 2nd gear—always return to neutral, restart the engine, and shift to 1st gear.
