The On-Board Computer (OBC) on most Club Car golf carts is located underneath the front side of the passenger seat, mounted directly to the vehicle's frame. On Precedent and DS models, you'll typically find it by lifting the seat and looking toward the front of the cart, near the batteries. It's a black, rectangular metal box, about the size of a small hardcover book, with a prominent aluminum heat sink and a wiring harness connected to it.
Before you start looking, the most important step is to ensure safety by turning the Run/Tow switch to the "Tow" position and disconnecting the main terminals. This prevents any electrical shorts or shocks. The OBC is a critical component that manages the charging cycle for your cart's batteries. It communicates with the external power charger to regulate voltage and current, ensuring the batteries are charged correctly without being overcharged.
If you have a newer Club Car model (generally post-2015) with an ERIC (External Recharging Integrated Circuit) charging system, the traditional OBC has been replaced. The charging computer in these models is integrated directly into the charger itself, not the cart. For older models, if you cannot locate the box, follow the thick cable from the charging port; it will lead you directly to the OBC.
| Club Car Model | Typical OBC Location | Key Identifying Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Club Car DS | Under passenger seat, front left frame rail | Black box with a large, finned aluminum heat sink |
| Club Car Precedent | Under passenger seat, centered on the crossmember | Same as DS, often has a yellow warning label |
| Club Car Carryall | Under the driver or passenger seat, near battery pack | Larger chassis, but OBC appearance is consistent |
| Models with ERIC Charger | No OBC on the vehicle; computer is in the charger | Charger will have an LED status display |

Lift the passenger seat and look toward the front. You’ll see a black metal box bolted to the frame, right near the batteries. It’s got a bunch of wires plugged into it and looks like it has a radiator on one side. That’s your OBC. Just make sure you flip the Run/Tow switch to "Tow" before you touch anything.

As a mechanic, I see this often. The OBC's location is consistent for troubleshooting. It's always under the seat, attached to the frame. You're looking for the component that the charger port cable runs to. Its primary job is management, so if you're having charging issues, this is the first place we check for damage or loose connections.

I had to find mine last summer when my cart wouldn't charge. After turning the key off and switching to "Tow," I lifted the seat. It was right there, a little dusty but easy to spot. It’s not hidden away. Knowing where it is saved me a trip to the repair shop because the connection had just jiggled loose.

From a technical perspective, the OBC is strategically placed under the seat for protection from the elements and for efficient cooling via its heat sink. Its proximity to the pack minimizes voltage drop in the sensing wires, which is crucial for accurate state-of-charge calculations. This placement is a deliberate design choice for both function and serviceability.
