Hongqi's engine is independently developed by FAW. Hongqi is a premium automotive brand directly operated by China FAW Group Corporation, with models including: Hongqi H9, Hongqi HS5, Hongqi HS7, Hongqi H7, Hongqi H5, etc. Taking the 2020 Hongqi H9 as an example, it is a mid-to-large-sized 4-door 5-seater sedan with body dimensions of: length 5137mm, width 1904mm, height 1493mm, and a wheelbase of 3060mm. The 2020 Hongqi H9 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering a maximum power of 185 kW and a maximum torque of 380 Nm.
The primary R&D location for Hongqi engines is at the R&D center of China FAW Group (FAW), situated in Changchun, Jilin. I recall that FAW has invested substantial resources in independent R&D from the early stages. Although they initially borrowed some foreign technologies, their progress in recent years has been remarkable. In 2018, they launched the Hongqi H9 equipped with a self-developed V6 engine, and now the latest L5 model features a fully domestically developed V8 engine. The Changchun base has specialized powertrain laboratories where engineering teams work on design and testing. Engine development involves complex aspects like material science and combustion efficiency optimization. Through continuous experience accumulation and innovation, FAW has created high-performance domestic engines. This reflects the rapid development of China's automotive industry, and I believe every Hongqi owner takes pride in our ability to produce such excellent engines.
Regarding the R&D location of Hongqi engines, FAW has a leading development center in Changchun. I know it gathers top domestic engineers who focus on engine innovation and optimization. In the past, FAW collaborated with foreign brands like Volkswagen and learned many technologies, but in the last decade, it has shifted toward independent R&D. For example, the engine in the Hongqi H5 is a result of local development. The Changchun R&D base is equipped with advanced testing facilities, including durability test benches and environmental simulation labs, ensuring engine stability under extreme conditions such as high/low temperatures and high pressure. The R&D process also involves collaboration with suppliers, but core design is controlled by FAW. From a user perspective, this ensures the reliability of Hongqi engines. I’ve noticed more local brands reducing external dependencies and promoting automotive self-sufficiency. This is a symbol of the growing strength of Chinese manufacturing.
