
Spark plugs are located in the cylinder head of your engine. They are threaded into the top of each cylinder, typically hidden under plastic engine covers, ignition coils, or spark plug wires. Their number corresponds directly to the number of engine cylinders—a four-cylinder engine has four plugs, a V6 has six, and so on.
The exact placement varies by engine design. In the majority of modern inline engines, plugs are mounted vertically on the top of the engine. In many V-type or older engines, they can be positioned on the sides of the cylinder heads. Underneath a plastic beauty cover, you'll find individual ignition coils seated directly atop each spark plug, a common setup known as coil-on-plug.
Locating them involves a few standard steps. First, identify and remove any plastic engine covers secured by clips or screws. Beneath, you'll see the ignition components. Follow the thick, rubber-insulated wires in older vehicles, or look for the electrical connectors and bolt-on plastic coil packs in newer models. These components must be carefully disconnected and removed to reveal the deep wells where the spark plugs are seated.
Accessing the plugs requires specific tools. A spark plug socket—typically 5/8-inch or 13/16-inch with a internal rubber insert to grip the plug—and a long extension bar are essential for reaching down the wells. A ratchet or torque wrench completes the set. It’s critical to work on a completely cool engine to avoid warping the cylinder head or stripping the aluminum threads.
Before removal, use compressed air to blow out any debris from around the coil or wire boot. This prevents dirt from falling into the cylinder, which can cause severe engine damage. When installing new plugs, always verify the electrode gap matches your vehicle manufacturer’s specification, which is often between 0.028 and 0.044 inches, as an incorrect gap can lead to misfires and poor fuel economy.

Just popped the hood and feeling lost? I get it. Look for the plastic cover on top—it usually says the engine name. Pop that off (it’s just clips). Now you’ll see either a bunch of thick rubber wires or several black plastic boxes with electrical connectors. Those are your ignition coils or wires. Each one sits right on top of a spark plug. That’s the spot. On some bigger V8 engines, you might find them lower down on the sides. If you see wires, they lead directly to the plugs. Don’t start unscrewing anything until the engine is stone cold.

As a weekend mechanic who’s changed plugs on a dozen cars, here’s my take. You’re hunting for the heart of the ignition system. On my old truck, they were right under the wires on the valve covers. On my modern sedan, everything was hidden under a giant plastic shroud. Removing that revealed the coil-on-plug units. The pattern is universal: one plug per cylinder. The challenge isn’t finding them; it’s getting to them. Some front-wheel-drive models bury the rear plugs against the firewall, requiring patience and a universal joint for your socket. The feeling when you pull that first old plug? That’s the real location—right between frustration and satisfaction.

In side-mounted designs on older V8s, the positioning is dictated by valve train and cylinder head architecture. Modern top-mounted coil-on-plug designs minimize energy loss and improve reliability. So, while the visual search starts with plastic covers and wires, the underlying principle is about optimal flame initiation. Understanding this “why” makes the “where” much more logical, whether you’re looking at a compact inline-four or a large-displacement V-configuration engine.
