After valuable parts are harvested, the remaining car shell, or “hulk,” is crushed and transported to a shredder. Here, powerful machinery tears the vehicle into small, fist-sized pieces. The shredded material then goes through a series of sorting stages. Powerful magnets extract ferrous metals (iron and steel), which account for about 65-70% of a vehicle’s weight. While modern recycling is highly effective, not every material is recoverable. Approximately 5-10% of the vehicle, known as Auto Shredder Residue (ASR) or “fluff,” which includes mixed plastics, fabrics, and foam, currently lacks economical recycling streams and is landfilled. Industry efforts continue to find solutions for these remaining materials.

Beyond standard recycling, other paths exist. Owners may donate their car to a charitable organization, which may sell it to fund its programs, offering the donor a tax deduction. Some vehicles become “parts cars,” parked on private property to serve as a source of spare parts for enthusiasts or mechanics. Government programs, like past “Cash for Clunkers” initiatives, have also been used to accelerate the retirement of older, high-emission vehicles.
