A good MPG (Miles Per Gallon) figure is highly dependent on the type of vehicle you drive. For a typical new car in the U.S. today, a combined city/highway rating of around 30 MPG is a solid benchmark. However, with a combined MPG of 40 or above, you're entering the territory of excellent fuel efficiency, typically achieved by hybrids and many modern compact cars. It's crucial to compare a vehicle's rating against others in its class; a large SUV getting 25 MPG can be considered efficient, while a subcompact car with the same rating would be subpar.

The EPA's fuel economy estimates are the standard for comparison. The following table shows the range of what's considered good for different vehicle types in the 2024 model year, based on EPA data.

Vehicle TypeGood Combined MPG (EPA Estimate)Excellent Combined MPG (EPA Estimate)
Subcompact Car33 - 36 MPG40+ MPG
Compact SUV/Crossover30 - 32 MPG35+ MPG
Midsize Sedan32 - 35 MPG45+ MPG (Hybrid)
Standard SUV/Truck22 - 25 MPG28+ MPG (Hybrid/Diesel)
Hybrid Vehicle45 - 50 MPG55+ MPG

Your driving habits are just as important as the number on the window sticker. Aggressive acceleration and high-speed highway driving can significantly lower your real-world MPG. To maximize efficiency, focus on smooth acceleration, maintaining a steady speed, and minimizing unnecessary idling. Ultimately, a "good" MPG is one that fits your budget and driving needs without compromising on the utility you require from a vehicle.

For me, a good MPG is whatever keeps me from stopping at the gas station more than once a week. I do a mix of city and highway driving for my commute. My last car got about 22 MPG, and I was constantly filling up. I recently upgraded to a crossover that averages 31 MPG. The difference is huge for my wallet and my time. I’d say if you’re looking at a new car, don’t settle for anything under 28 MPG combined unless you absolutely need a truck.

Look beyond just the MPG number. A car rated for 35 MPG on the highway might only get 28 in the city, which matters if you're mostly a city driver. Also, premium fuel can erase any savings from slightly better mileage. A good MPG is a balance of the official rating and realistic, low-cost operation. I always check the "Annual Fuel Cost" on the EPA sticker—it translates MPG into actual dollars, which is what really counts.

Context is everything. A "good" MPG for a full-size pickup truck is around 23 MPG combined, but that same number would be terrible for a compact sedan. My advice is to use the EPA's website to compare vehicles within the same class. Set a personal threshold; for many, anything over 30 MPG combined is a win. It’s about finding the most efficient vehicle that still meets your needs for space, power, and safety.

I think about it in terms of technology. A non-hybrid getting 34 MPG is good, but a hybrid achieving 48 MPG is exceptional. For a purely gasoline-powered car, I'd want at least 30 MPG combined. However, with so many efficient hybrids and EVs available, my definition of "good" has shifted. Now, I consider the total cost of ownership, where a high-MPG hybrid or an EV often makes more financial sense over time, even with a higher sticker price.

What to Do When the Light Turns Red While in the Middle of the Road?

When a vehicle enters the intersection during a green light and the light turns red, it may continue through the intersection. Illegal monitoring begins the instant the red light activates. While crossing the intersection, drivers should courteously yield to pedestrians on crosswalks. Pedestrians on crosswalks are considered vulnerable and have the right of way. If you cross the stop line after the light turns red, do not attempt to reverse to avoid penalties. Vehicles following large trucks often get caught by cameras because they proceed through the intersection after the signal has changed. To check for violations, log in to the local traffic police website 3-5 days after the incident and enter your license plate number and engine number.

How to Sit Comfortably While Driving?

There should be at least a fist's distance between the head and the car roof. When the driver looks straight ahead, their gaze should fall on the center line of the front windshield. Adjust the distance between the seat and the pedals. If the distance is larger, the driver's legs will be more comfortable when extended, but the force applied when stepping on the pedals may be insufficient. After adjusting the seat height and front-back position, proceed to adjust the steering wheel. Position your hands naturally apart for easy turning, while keeping your elbows and shoulders relaxed.

What to Do When the Car Windows Fog Up Inside the Car?

Solutions for foggy car windows when sitting inside the car include: 1. Use a defogging agent to remove the fog by spraying it evenly on the glass surface and then wiping it clean with a dry towel; 2. Turn on the windshield wipers by setting them to a low speed and let them run until the fog disappears; 3. Change the air source—most cars have a button to either recirculate the air inside the car or draw fresh air from outside; 4. Lower the temperature inside the car. Fog is caused by temperature differences, so matching the interior temperature to the outside temperature can reduce fogging. Increase the car fan setting and lower the temperature as much as possible.
