The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is not open to all vehicles. Currently, only five types of vehicles are permitted to cross the bridge: freight vehicles, shuttle buses, cross-border taxis, cross-border buses, and cross-border private cars. Below are the relevant details: 1. Cross-border buses: In the first year of the bridge's operation, a total of 200 cross-border bus quotas were allocated for Guangdong-Hong Kong and Hong Kong-Macao routes, with 150 for Guangdong-Hong Kong (for joint ventures) and 50 for Hong Kong-Macao (34 for Hong Kong and 16 for Macao), all of which have been issued (Note: Passenger vehicles are not allowed between Zhuhai and Macao ports). An additional 200 quotas were allocated for Guangdong-Hong Kong cross-border buses currently operating at other ports to switch to the bridge. 2. Shuttle buses: Port shuttle buses serve as the primary means of transportation between the Guangdong-Hong Kong and Hong Kong-Macao ports of the bridge, providing connecting services. During peak hours, buses run every 5 minutes, during off-peak hours every 10-15 minutes, and late at night every 15-30 minutes. 3. Cross-border taxis: In the first three years of the bridge's operation, a total of 250 cross-border taxi quotas were allocated for Guangdong-Hong Kong and Hong Kong-Macao routes, with 150 for Guangdong-Hong Kong and 100 for Hong Kong-Macao. Each quota allows one cross-border taxi to operate with unlimited daily trips. 4. Freight vehicles: For Guangdong-Hong Kong cross-border trucks, current vehicles can cross the bridge without additional formalities (excluding trucks to and from the Futian Free Trade Zone). No additional quotas for Guangdong-Hong Kong cross-border trucks will be added in the initial phase of the bridge's operation. 5. Cross-border private cars: These refer to vehicles with dual Guangdong-Hong Kong license plates. Private cars without dual plates are not permitted on the bridge. To experience the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, one must complete customs procedures and take cross-border buses or shuttle buses.

Last time I drove to Zhuhai for a trip, I specifically checked the vehicle regulations for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Ordinary private cars need to have dual license plates from Guangdong and Hong Kong to access the bridge. There are conditions for applying for the license plates, such as corporate legal entities in Guangdong with investments exceeding 10 million HKD being eligible to apply, while individuals need to have paid taxes exceeding 1 million continuously for three years in Guangdong. The vehicle itself must be left-hand drive and have a height limit of 4.2 meters—my modified SUV with altered suspension almost exceeded this limit. However, a limited number of slots are now open for single-plate vehicles from Hong Kong and Macao, and you can see quite a few right-hand drive vehicles passing through at the bridge's shuttle bus stations. Temporary trucks crossing the bridge need to apply for a cross-border pass in advance, and oversized cargo transport requires special approval.

When I went on a self-driving trip to Macau, I specifically researched the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The bridge allows vehicles with license plates from Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong. The most common vehicles I saw were cross-border buses and dual-plate shuttle vans. To drive across the bridge, you need a quota allocation. Individuals must meet three conditions to obtain a license: owning a company in Guangdong with over a million yuan in tax payments for three years, and holding a Hong Kong driver's license. It's a pity motorcycles aren't allowed, but electric vehicles can now pass. The speed limit on the bridge is 100 km/h, and there's an automatic speed reduction system for winds above level 8. If you don't have a dual-plate, don't worry—just take the Golden Bus shuttle, which crosses the bridge in just 5 minutes.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has unique traffic rules. Private vehicles must display dual license plates from both Hong Kong and mainland China, while temporary cross-border trucks need to apply for a cross-border permit. For passenger vehicles, cross-border tour buses are the most convenient option, with bridge shuttle buses operating 24/7. According to my research, cross-border buses account for 60% of daily traffic. Owners of non-Yue Z license plates shouldn't be discouraged, as there are hundreds of daily cross-border passenger routes departing from Zhuhai. The bridge lanes are divided into left and right driving zones, with a height limit of 4.2 meters that even prohibits RVs. Most interestingly, all vehicles crossing the bridge must cooperate with the tripartite joint inspection system.

Last month, my colleague drove a dual-plate car to Hong Kong for a business trip and mentioned how smart the traffic management is on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Private cars with dual license plates can use the automatic customs clearance lane, completing border inspection in just three minutes. Cross-border commercial vehicles are required to install the BeiDou positioning system, and I noticed many vehicles with small black boxes on their roofs at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao toll station. Freight vehicles face stricter customs procedures, with fresh agricultural product vehicles prioritized through the green channel. The bridge's lanes are divided with Hong Kong-bound traffic keeping left and Zhuhai-bound traffic keeping right, accommodating both left-hand and right-hand drive vehicles. It's advisable to carry all necessary documents and electronic tag cards, as self-service customs clearance can save half an hour of queuing.

As a new energy vehicle owner, the most concerning issue is the policy for electric vehicles crossing the bridge. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge clearly allows new energy vehicles to pass, but they must display license plates from both Guangdong and Hong Kong. I noticed the charging infrastructure planning is quite reasonable: the Zhuhai Port has fast charging stations, while the Hong Kong Port offers battery swapping services. Pure electric vehicle owners should pay special attention to their range—with the bridge spanning 55 kilometers and the time required for customs inspection at both ports, it's advisable to start with a full charge. Fuel-powered vehicles face stricter customs requirements, needing to prepare Hong Kong and Macao vehicle environmental certifications. For hybrid vehicles crossing the bridge, using the self-service lane with dual Zhuhai-Hong Kong license plates is the fastest option.

The Difference Between Ventilated Disc and Solid Disc Brake Types

The differences between ventilated disc and solid disc brake types are as follows: 1. Different positions. Solid discs usually refer to ordinary solid discs, which are mostly made of gray iron with fast heat dissipation, and are mostly used for the rear wheels or front wheels of cars. Ventilated discs can be used for all four wheels, but are mostly used for the front wheels. 2. Different structures. Ventilated discs have a wide selection of friction materials, with ventilation holes in the middle of the brake disc, which have many more process holes than solid discs. They are lighter in weight than solid discs, but the manufacturing process and price are more expensive than solid discs. 3. Different heat dissipation performance. Ventilated discs have stronger heat dissipation performance than solid discs. They can improve heat dissipation through the holes on the disc, and their service life is also longer than that of solid discs, making them an improvement over solid discs. 4. Different braking effects. Since ventilated discs can quickly dissipate heat during braking, the braking effect is also very good. Solid discs may be affected by the heat generated during braking, which can impact their braking performance.
