The Buick Encore uses 5W40 engine oil with a replacement capacity of 4L. It employs fully synthetic oil with a replacement interval of 5,000 kilometers. The Buick Encore is a compact SUV launched by SAIC-GM Buick, with body dimensions of 4295mm in length, 1798mm in width, and 1607mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2570mm. The Buick Encore offers two powertrain options: a 1.0T turbocharged engine and a 1.3T turbocharged engine. The 1.0T engine delivers a maximum power of 92 kW and a maximum torque of 180 Nm, while the 1.3T engine produces a maximum power of 121 kW and a maximum torque of 240 Nm. In terms of the transmission system, the 1.0T model is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the 1.3T model is equipped with a CVT continuously variable transmission.

I remember when I last serviced my Encore, I specifically asked the mechanic about the engine oil. My 1.3T model requires 0W-20 oil, the kind with the dexos1 label on the barrel. The newer models with particulate filters need low-ash oil, otherwise they're prone to clogging. The shop guy said the older 1.0T models actually use 5W-30. When changing the oil, it's crucial to replace the oil filter as well—the Mann W7030 model is the best match. Once, I saw a neighbor cheap out and use 5W-40, and the engine noise became as loud as a tractor. They had to rush back to the shop for a redo to quiet it down. Turbocharged cars really need to stick to the specified viscosity in the manual—protecting the turbo shaft oil film is especially important.

Just had my 2016 Buick Encore serviced and specifically checked the manual. For this 1.4L engine, 5W-30 full synthetic oil is most suitable, preferably with GM dexos certification. The mechanic said this Buick engine is quite picky about oil - using the wrong type can easily lead to sludge buildup. Last time I used a well-known brand's 5W-30 full synthetic, I immediately noticed much smoother cold starts and significantly less steering wheel vibration. Their service department recommended Shell Helix Ultra, which cost just over 600 yuan for six liters - decent value for money. Remember to regularly check the dipstick as this car consumes oil faster than Japanese models.

The engine oil for the Encore depends on the engine model. The new 1.3T must use 0W-20 low-viscosity oil, especially those with GPF particulate filters which require SP-grade low-ash oil. The older 1.4T uses 5W-30 full synthetic, such as Mobil EP or Castrol Edge. Don’t be fooled into adding 40-viscosity oil—higher oil pump pressure can damage the variable valve system. Any oil with the dexos1 mark on the cap is suitable. If you’re changing it yourself, you’ll need about 5.7 liters; reserve half a bottle for gradual top-ups to ensure precision.
