What to Do When Your Car Is Flooded?

Report the incident to your insurance company and register a claim. If conditions permit, take photos to preserve evidence, which will facilitate the later damage assessment and claims process. Both insurance companies and 4S shops offer towing and rescue services, or you can contact a rescue company on your own for towing assistance. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible for damage assessment, and then have the repair facility handle the necessary repairs.
If your car gets flooded, never attempt to start the engine – stepping on the gas pedal will destroy it immediately. When my car got submerged during a heavy rainstorm with water nearly reaching the dashboard, my first move was unbuckling the seatbelt and pushing the door open. If water levels are high, smash the windows to escape – remember to use the emergency hammer to strike the four corners where glass breaks easiest. Once out, call the police and a tow truck immediately; never foolishly return to retrieve belongings. At the repair shop, remove all seats and carpets for sun-drying, or you’ll find mushrooms growing in the cabin within weeks. Electrical connectors require three days of dehumidifier treatment, or turn signals will malfunction. Note: All flood-damaged vehicles undergo rigorous insurance scrutiny – preserving on-scene photos is absolutely critical.
