What to Do When the Trunk is Frozen and Won't Open?

Solutions for a frozen trunk that won't open: 1. Use the key remote control to press the trunk opening button on the car key directly. However, some models may not have a trunk opening button on the remote key, in which case you just need to press the unlock button to unlock it. For models equipped with a smart sensing key, pressing the switch on the tailgate can directly open the trunk; 2. Use a hot towel to slowly thaw the frozen trunk to open it; 3. Open the trunk from inside the car using the control switch. Most current models are equipped with a trunk opening button, usually located on the left side of the steering wheel or in the central control area; 4. It could also be a wiring fault issue. After ruling out the freezing cause, it is recommended to go to a 4S store for inspection and repair.
I often encounter the issue of a frozen trunk when driving in Harbin during winter. Forcibly pulling it open can damage the seals or even deform the latch. Now, I first start the car and turn on the heater to blow warm air toward the trunk for about ten minutes to warm up the car body. Then, I prepare a basin of warm water around 40°C, soak a towel in it, and repeatedly wipe the latch area and seal gaps to melt the ice. Wait until you hear a click indicating the lock has released before gently pulling the trunk open. If that doesn’t work, I use a car-mounted heater to blow warm air directly at the lock for a few minutes, but be sure to maintain a safe distance to avoid damaging the paint. For prevention, I usually apply a layer of silicone grease on the seals or place a piece of paper between the trunk and the body when parking to allow airflow.
