What to Do When the Motorcycle Fuel Line Doesn't Deliver Fuel?

When the motorcycle engine is turned off, removing the fuel line won't release any fuel; the engine needs to be running to create a vacuum that opens the fuel tank switch, allowing fuel to flow. When the engine is not running, you can also remove the vent pipe of the fuel tank switch and suck on it with your mouth, which will allow fuel to flow through the fuel line.
As a seasoned rider with over a decade of motorcycle experience, don't panic if you encounter fuel line blockage. The most common issue is clogged fuel lines, especially on bikes that haven't been ridden for a long time, where sediment in the tank blocks the fuel line outlet. You can try removing the fuel tap and using a thin wire to clear the fuel line. If that doesn't work, the filter screen inside the fuel tap might be clogged with varnish, requiring disassembly for cleaning. Also, check if the fuel line is pinched or kinked, particularly on bikes with modified seats that may compress the line. Finally, inspect if the carburetor float needle valve is stuck, which would require carburetor disassembly. Last time I faced this issue, it was due to the fuel line being crushed by the seat, and rerouting the line solved the problem.
As a DIY car owner who frequently works on my own vehicle, I follow a four-step process when dealing with fuel line issues. First, check the fuel tank switch by turning it to the reserve position to see if that helps. Second, inspect the fuel line connections, as both ends are prone to gum buildup and blockage; disconnecting them and blowing compressed air through can be very effective. Third, examine the carburetor's fuel inlet, especially in older cars where the small filter screen can get clogged like a sieve. Finally, inspect the fuel line itself, as cracks causing air leaks or internal delamination can disrupt fuel flow. I remember one time my car's issue was caused by the inner lining of the fuel line peeling off and blocking it; cutting off that section restored normal operation. It's also a good practice to use a filtered funnel when refueling to minimize such problems.
