What is an MPV?

MPV stands for Multi-Purpose Vehicle, which evolved from station wagons. It combines the spacious passenger area of a station wagon, the comfort of a sedan, and the functionality of a van, featuring a two-box design. MPVs are categorized into: family MPVs and commercial MPVs, and by seating capacity into 5-seaters and 7-seaters. Common MPV models include: Buick GL8, Baojun 730, Honda Odyssey, Honda Elysion, GAC Trumpchi M6, Dongfeng Fengxing Lingzhi, etc. Taking the Baojun 730 as an example, its body dimensions are: length 4780mm, width 1780mm, height 1740mm, with a wheelbase of 2750mm.
MPV is what we commonly refer to as a minivan or family multi-purpose vehicle. For someone like me with two kids, it's indispensable for weekend outings. When I used to drive a sedan, installing a child safety seat left the back seat cramped for even one adult. After switching to an MPV, the second row features two independent seats—kids sit comfortably while adults can move around easily to attend to them. The most crucial feature is the sliding door; no more worrying about dinging neighboring cars in tight parking spots at shopping centers. The third row can genuinely accommodate adults, unlike some SUVs where it's merely decorative. Plus, the trunk has ample space for strollers and family luggage, making it perfect for family trips. However, driving it alone does feel like steering a boat, and parking can be more challenging.
