What does the R gear mean?

R gear means reverse gear, used for reversing; D gear means drive gear: the car must be shifted to D gear to move forward; P gear means parking gear, when the car is parked and not in use, the gear is in this position, at which time the wheels are mechanically locked to prevent the car from rolling. Additionally, there is the L gear, which means low gear. When going downhill or descending a long slope, shifting to this gear limits the car's gear to only the lowest gear (equivalent to first gear in a manual transmission car), allowing the car to use engine power for braking when going downhill, preventing the driver from having to press the brake for a long time, which could cause the brake pads to overheat and lead to danger.
I remember when I first started driving, I was really confused when I saw the letter R on the gear shift—I thought it stood for Racing! Later, I asked a friend and learned that R stands for Reverse, meaning the gear for backing up. Simply put, when you need to move backward while driving, like reversing out of a parking spot or adjusting your position, you have to shift into this gear. Never shift gears while the car is moving, as it can damage the transmission or even cause danger. When driving, I make it a habit to check my surroundings before shifting into R, ensuring there are no people or obstacles behind me, and I use the rearview camera for assistance. This habit has helped me avoid several minor accidents. Shift smoothly and avoid slamming the accelerator. If a new car makes strange noises while reversing, it might be time to check the transmission fluid. Developing safe habits is more important than anything else.
