They built airplane engines. Back during the First World War, that was the big business in Germany. When the war ended, they were stuck with all this knowledge for making powerful, precise engines but couldn't make planes anymore. So, they turned to motorcycles next. It makes total sense—a motorcycle is basically an engine with wheels. Once they mastered that, moving to cars was the next logical step. It’s all about that engine know-how.
