What Causes the Motorcycle Chain to Tighten and Loosen Intermittently?

Motorcycle chain tightening and loosening intermittently is mainly caused by loose fastening nuts. Check the condition of the chain: The pitch of the sprocket teeth may have errors. Although sprocket processing is precise, small batches are often cut with wire or milled with a milling cutter. Solution: If the chain is damaged, replace it directly. If the chain is intact, pre-tighten it first, adjust the chain tension, and then fully fasten it. Check the cushion shaft: Apply grease regularly. Since the working environment of this bearing is relatively harsh, failure to lubricate it on time may cause significant damage. Check the front and rear sprockets: Check whether the front and rear sprockets and the chain are aligned. If they are not aligned, perform maintenance.
I often repair motorcycles, and uneven chain tension is usually because the chain is too worn out and needs replacement. Over time, the chain stretches and becomes uneven, causing the ride to feel tight at times and loose at others. Another common issue is improper adjustment of the rear axle, where the nuts are loose or the adjustment blocks are misaligned, leading to inconsistent chain tension. Additionally, if the chain tensioner is damaged or stuck, it can also cause this problem. A chain that's too dry or excessively dirty, affecting its sliding, is another reason. Don’t underestimate this issue—a suddenly loose chain can skip or derail, which is very dangerous and can lead to a crash. It’s best to regularly check the chain tension with a ruler; the standard free play should be 2-3 cm. If you notice any abnormalities, go to the shop immediately—don’t skimp on safety.
